This novel spans from 1973 to the 1990's. The style is easy to follow and, for those who lived in those times, extremely realistic. The characters are well defined and unlike many authors there are not too many. Starting with the training and "The Oath of Allegiance" the treatment of fallen aviators as POW's in Hanoi is described. Alongside this are the young intellectual protestors of that era in America, accusing the powers that be of trying to destroy communistic ideals for their own gain. Woven into this are the abusers of young idealists who, together with the communists, finance trips into war zones where POW's are paraded to show how well they are being treated! One of the survivors vows to expose this abuse by those Americans who profited. I found myself empathizing with him and having to mentally strike a balance between the " hero " or investigating officer, and the POW. A refreshing change from the novels which are overloaded with intrigue and characters. Interesting, romantic, idealistic and historically very possible.This novel warrants 5 stars, except for the need for proof reading and correction of typo's, 23 of which I highlighted as it is such a good book and worth taking the trouble to correct.

Tom "Mac" McGuire is a homicide inspector in San Francisco. He and his partner Mike Irvine get the call to investigate the killing. When he hears the victim's name, Mac feels the three-decades-old phantom pain of torture. The crime scene brings the phantom pain into sharp focus. The victim has been tortured like a Vietnam POW.
Dennis Koller's The Oath is an exciting thriller. The twists and turns keep the reading guessing until the surprising end.
We met Mr. Koller at breakfast one morning in a hotel in Portland, Oregon. He and his wife were kind enough to share their table with us during a busy breakfast hour. We got to talking and he told us about his book, "The Oath." I asked if I could order it on my and he said that I could. As an avid reader, I'm always looking for a new author or a new book -- especially if it's not too expensive. For a first novel (he said it was his first) I thought it was pretty good. Certainly won't win a Pulitzer prize for literature, but one I enjoyed and did want to read all the way through. (I've been known to stop and give up on a poorly written piece.) I liked the character of the police officer but found the girlfriend and the bad guy (no spoilers here from me) a little shallow. The concept of two men who have had the same extremely bad experience and how they have chosen two different paths to follow as they go on with their lives and deal with the horror in their past is an interesting one. I encourage Mr. Koller to keep on writing and to work a little harder on his character development. He has strong potential. I am glad we met him that day in Portland and will look forward to his future works.
Let me start off by saying I paid for this book on I was not given a free copy.
This was a VERY well written book that kept me turning the pages. It was NOT your typical murder mystery (which is normally not a genre I enjoy a lot). The characters were very well formed, with enough detail given to flesh them out without the overkill of too much minutia or detail that gets you bogged down. A former POW of the Vietnam war is killing people, and he has his eye on the Governor of California. Why? Well, you're going to have to read the book--I'm not into spoilers.
The protagonist (Tom McGuire) of the SFPD has to find the killer, that's his job. But it becomes more urgent as he discovers the killer's next target is the Governor of California. Early in the investigation, he meets one hot number Michele Sullivan. And the sparks fly. Not only from Michele...the SFPD seems to have some reasons why they want this investigation smothered...and even the Governor himself wants to keep things under wraps.
I couldn't stop turning the pages, and I stayed up late over my July 4th weekend to finish it! Don't miss this book...you'll have missed a great read. It left me waiting for the author's next book.
A dying former POW, four dead women, a world-weary homicide cop and the Vietnam War are expertly woven together by Dennis Koller in a masterful piece of storytelling that will leave you guessing right until the last few pages of 'The Oath.'
Every page in this suspense novel has the ring of truth about it; from the killer's justifications for what he is doing to the steps taken by the homicide detectives who are trying to catch him before he kills again, Koller takes no false steps. He clearly understands how police departments work and, more importantly, he knows how conflicted cops can get when they are working a case and can understand - if not agree with - the motivation of some killers. As a former journalist who covered a lot of cop stories during my 45-plus year career, I can say that I have many times seen cops wrestle with those inner conflicts while pursuing criminals.
Koller gets it right.
His writing is clear and to the point, not overworked. He does a wonderful job of putting the reader in the moment in a few short sentences where other writers might spend paragraphs and even pages trying to do the same thing without ever accomplishing that goal.
This is an excellent book with just the right amount of social commentary woven into its pages to make it not just another murder mystery.
